4 Important Facts You Should Know About Glaucoma

Glaucoma is an eye disease that damages the optic nerve in your eyes. This usually occurs when extra fluid builds up in the front section of your eye, increasing pressure and damaging the optic nerve.

Although glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in individuals 60 years old and older, glaucoma can actually be prevented if treated early.

Types of Glaucoma

There are two major types of glaucoma.

Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma

This is the most common type of glaucoma in older people. This type of glaucoma happens gradually, they fluid in the eye slowly building up and not draining fluid as it should. This type of glaucoma doesn’t cause vision changes and is painless.

Angle-Closure Glaucoma

This type occurs when the iris is close the drainage angle in the eye and blocks the drainage angle. Once the drainage angle is totally blocked, eye pressure quickly rises and can cause blindness if not treated immediately.

Is There a Cure?

Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for glaucoma. However, most cases can be treated with prescription eye drops, oral medication, laser treatments, or surgery.
